Hydrotherapy for Neurological Conditions

Hydrotherapy for Neurological Conditions in Brisbane

A neurological diagnosis — whether that is stroke, multiple sclerosis, motor neuron disease, Parkinson’s, or spinal cord injury — often changes the way your body moves. Muscles may be weak, spastic, or difficult to control. Balance becomes unpredictable. Exercise on land can feel overwhelming or simply impossible. At Hydrotherapy Studio in Underwood, physiotherapist Ben Strachan works one-on-one with clients with complex neurological conditions, using warm water to support movement that land-based therapy cannot always provide. No matter how your condition affects your mobility, we have the equipment and expertise to work with you safely.

Water gives your body the support it can’t find on land

We Understand the Challenges of Neurological Rehab

After a stroke, an MS relapse, or a spinal cord injury, regaining movement can feel like an uphill battle. Fatigue sets in quickly. Spasticity, weakness, or impaired coordination can make even simple exercises on land unsafe or discouraging. You may have been told to keep active, but the reality is much more complicated than that. Hydrotherapy Studio was founded by physiotherapist Ben Strachan specifically for clients who face these kinds of challenges. The warm water environment reduces the physical demands of exercise while still allowing meaningful rehabilitation — and our fully accessible facilities mean no mobility level is too complex for us to work with.

Complex needs welcome — our facilities are built for it

Why Water Works for Neurological Rehabilitation

Warm water hydrotherapy offers unique benefits for people recovering from or managing neurological conditions. The buoyancy reduces the effects of gravity, allowing clients with weakness, spasticity, or poor balance to move in ways that simply are not possible on land. The warmth of the pool helps ease muscle tension and can reduce the discomfort associated with conditions like MS and Parkinson’s. Water resistance also provides gentle, constant feedback to the body — which supports proprioception and motor relearning after stroke or spinal cord injury. Sessions at Hydrotherapy Studio are entirely one-on-one. Ben designs a personalised program for each client based on their diagnosis, current function, and goals — and you do not need to be able to swim. Our pools are accessible via ramps, gentle stairs, and specialist hoist equipment, so we can accommodate any level of mobility.

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

Your first session is conducted in the water. Bring swimwear, a towel, and any referrals you have — there are private changing facilities on site. Ben will start by learning about your diagnosis, your current movement, and what you are hoping to achieve. From there, he guides you through exercises specifically suited to your condition, at a pace that suits you. The pool is 1.2m deep and fully accessible via ramps, gentle stairs, and a specialist hoist — so no matter your level of mobility, getting in safely is not a barrier. You will leave your first session with a personalised hydrotherapy program to follow. Sessions are available in 30, 45, or 60-minute formats, and referrals are welcome but not required to get started.
