Paediatric Hydrotherapy Brisbane

Paediatric Hydrotherapy in Brisbane

Some children struggle in traditional swimming lessons — not because they lack ability, but because their condition, behaviour, or physical needs require a different approach. At Hydrotherapy Studio in Underwood, physiotherapist Ben Strachan works one-on-one with children of all ages, using warm water to support rehabilitation that can be difficult or impossible to achieve on land. Whether your child has a complex medical condition, a developmental delay, or a behavioural challenge that makes group settings unmanageable, we have the experience and facilities to work with them safely. No mobility level is too complex for us to accommodate.

Kids move better in water — and they enjoy it too

Who We Work With

Hydrotherapy Studio was founded by physiotherapist Ben Strachan to support clients who face real barriers to exercise on land — and children are very much part of that picture. We work with children who have complex medical conditions such as cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorder, acquired brain injury, or genetic and neurological diagnoses. We also see children who struggle with traditional swimming lessons due to sensory sensitivities, behavioural challenges, or physical limitations that make group settings unworkable. Beyond rehabilitation, hydrotherapy is also highly effective for building strength, improving endurance, and developing motor control in children who need a gentler, more supportive environment. Our facilities are fully equipped for all mobility levels — including specialist hoist equipment, lifters, and gentle pool access — so no child’s needs are too complex for us to manage safely.

Every child is different — our approach is built around yours

Why Water Works So Well for Children

Water has a unique ability to reduce the physical and psychological barriers that often make land-based therapy difficult for children. Buoyancy offloads the effects of gravity, allowing children with weakness, tone issues, or poor coordination to move more freely and with less effort. The warmth of the pool helps relax tight muscles and can make children who are usually resistant to exercise far more willing to participate. Perhaps most importantly, children naturally enjoy being in water — which means sessions feel less like therapy and more like play. This engagement makes it easier to work on meaningful goals like strength, endurance, balance, and motor control. For children who have never been able to access traditional swimming lessons, hydrotherapy can also be a stepping stone toward water confidence and, in some cases, independent swimming. Sessions at Hydrotherapy Studio are conducted entirely one-on-one with Ben, and your child does not need to be able to swim. The pool is 1.2m deep and accessible via ramps, gentle stairs, and specialist hoist equipment.

Referrals welcome — and NDIS, CTP, and WorkCover bulk billed

What to Expect at Your Child’s First Appointment

The first session takes place in the water. Bring swimwear, a towel, and any referrals you have — there are private changing facilities on site. Ben will spend time understanding your child’s diagnosis, current abilities, and what you are hoping to achieve. From there, he guides your child through exercises suited to their specific needs, at a pace that works for them. The pool is 1.2m deep and accessible via ramps, gentle stairs, and a specialist hoist, so getting in safely is not a barrier regardless of mobility level. Your child will leave the first session with a personalised hydrotherapy program. Sessions are available in 30, 45, or 60-minute formats — referrals are welcome but not required to get started.
