Hydrotherapy for Post-Surgery Recovery

The Best Place to Start Your Recovery is in the Water

After a knee replacement, hip replacement, ankle reconstruction or spinal surgery, you know you need to move — but every step on land is a reminder of how much it hurts. Hydrotherapy is where most post-surgical rehab should begin. Warm water unloads your joints, supports your body weight and lets you exercise with far less pain from the very first session. At Hydrotherapy Studio in Underwood, physiotherapist Ben Strachan will guide you through a personalised water-based program built specifically around your surgery and your recovery stage.

Water is where post-surgical rehab should start

You Know You Need to Exercise. So Why Does It Feel Impossible?

Your surgeon has told you that exercise is essential for a full recovery. But getting off the couch is painful, walking on hard ground puts strain through your new joint, and the stiffness makes normal movement feel weeks away. We hear this every day. Hydrotherapy Studio was built specifically for people in exactly this situation — those who need to rehabilitate but cannot yet tolerate land-based exercise. Physiotherapist Ben Strachan founded the studio to fill this gap, and it is what we do best.

Warm water lets you exercise before land-based rehab is possible

Why Hydrotherapy Accelerates Post-Surgical Recovery

When you step into our heated pool, buoyancy reduces the load through your joints by up to 80 percent. That means you can start walking, bending and building strength earlier — with far less pain than on land. The warm water also eases swelling, relaxes the muscles around your surgical site and improves circulation for faster tissue healing. Whether you have had a knee replacement, hip replacement, ankle reconstruction or spinal surgery, Ben will design a water-based program specific to your procedure and where you are in your recovery — progressively restoring your range of motion, rebuilding strength and helping you move with confidence again.

Less pain. Real progress. Every session.

What to Expect at Your First Session

Bring your swimwear, a towel, and any referral or discharge paperwork from your surgeon — we have private changing facilities on site. Your first session takes place in the water. Ben will start with a one-on-one consultation to learn about your surgery, your current pain and mobility, and what you want to achieve. From there you will move straight into your first tailored exercises in the pool. You will leave with a personalised hydrotherapy program to follow at each subsequent visit. Our pools include underwater treadmills, accessibility ramps and hoists, so getting in is straightforward even in the earliest stages of recovery. Sessions are available in 30, 45 or 60-minute blocks.

Pricing and How to Get Started

Most people can begin hydrotherapy around two weeks after surgery, once the wound has closed — though we recommend checking with your surgeon before your first session. One-on-one sessions with Ben start at $91.50 for 30 minutes, $137.25 for 45 minutes or $183 for 60 minutes. If you have an NDIS plan, CTP claim or WorkCover QLD referral, we can bulk bill directly — just bring your referral and any discharge paperwork. Medicare rebates are available with a GP or surgeon referral (a gap may apply). We accept all major cards, EFTPOS and HICAPS for on-the-spot health fund claiming. Once you have an established program and are comfortable in the water, independent pool rental is available from $20 for 30 minutes. Book online or call (07) 3132 2785. We are open Monday to Friday 8:30am–5pm and Saturday 8am–2pm at 5/54 Kingston Rd, Underwood — just off the motorway with parking on site.
