Hydrotherapy for Stroke Rehabilitation

Hydrotherapy for Stroke Recovery in Brisbane

Recovering from a stroke is one of the most challenging journeys a person can face. At Hydrotherapy Studio in Underwood, physiotherapist Ben Strachan provides one-on-one aquatic rehabilitation sessions designed specifically for stroke survivors. Whether you are dealing with hemiplegia, balance difficulties, or relearning how to walk, our private heated pool and underwater treadmill offer a safe, supportive environment to regain movement and independence.

Recovery starts with a single step — even in water

How Stroke Affects Daily Life

A stroke can change everything in an instant. Weakness or paralysis on one side of your body, difficulty with balance, problems walking, fatigue that makes even short activities exhausting, and spasticity that tightens muscles beyond your control. Many stroke survivors find that land-based exercise feels impossible or unsafe — the fear of falling is constant, and the frustration of losing abilities you once took for granted can be overwhelming. You may have been told to keep moving, but every step on hard ground feels like a risk.

Your brain can rewire — water helps it happen

How Hydrotherapy Helps After a Stroke

Warm water at 34°C reduces spasticity almost immediately, allowing muscles to relax and move through ranges that feel impossible on land. The buoyancy of water supports your weakened limbs, enabling you to practise standing, stepping, and walking with significantly reduced fall risk. Our underwater treadmill allows precise gait retraining — adjusting speed and water depth to match your current ability. Water resistance provides gentle strengthening that builds functional power without the jarring impact of land-based exercise. Research shows that aquatic therapy promotes neuroplasticity — helping your brain form new pathways to control movement. Ben designs every program around your specific deficits and goals, progressing at your pace.

Every session brings you closer to independence

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

Your first session begins with an assessment of your mobility, strength, and neurological function. Ben will design a program focused on your rehabilitation goals — which may include gait retraining, upper limb function, balance, and strength. The water provides support and resistance that makes early movement safer and more effective than on land. You’ll leave with a laminated copy of your program.
